  18. If you run Windows NT on a RISC-based computer, such as a MIPS or a
  19. DEC Alpha machine, random ASCII characters may display in a Virtual
  20. MS-DOS Machine (VDM) window.
  21.  
  22. CAUSE
  23. =====
  24.  
  25. If you run an application that uses a Program Information File (PIF)
  26. that has the Allow Fast Paste box clear (unchecked), you may receive
  27. random ASCII characters in the VDM window, such as @^@^@^@^.
  28.  
  29. Steps to Reproduce Problem
  30. --------------------------
  31.  
  32. 1. On an Alpha or MIPS machine, open the PIF Editor.
  33.  
  34. 2. Type COMMAND.COM in the Program Filename box.
  35.  
  36. 3. Choose the Advanced options.
  37.  
  38. 4. Under Other Options, clear the Allow Fast Paste check box.
  39.  
  40. 5. Choose OK. 
  41.  
  42. 6. Save the PIF as TEST.PIF and close the PIF Editor. 
  43.  
  44. 7. From Program Manager, choose Run from the File menu.
  45.  
  46. 8. On the command line, type TEST.PIF and press ENTER.
  47.  
  48. When the VDM window opens, you may notice some random ASCII characters
  49. displayed.

  54. To work around the problem, either select (enable) the Allow Fast
  55. Paste check box in the PIF file or delete the characters, using the
  56. BACKSPACE key in the VDM window.

  58. STATUS

  61. Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 3.1
  62. and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. We are researching this
  63. problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge
  64. Base as it becomes available.
